Lvov, 1665 Printed at the the printing house of Michael Slyozka, which operated in Lvov 1638-1667.
Over 50 Orthodox and Catholic editions of religious books were printed by this house, all in Church Slavonic and Latin. The Reneaisance art style was reflected in the artistic decoration of books made by Slyozka. Folio, 424 leaves. 25 illustrations (7 full page), numerous large enfangs. Wooden boards covered with later satin, contemporary metal straps depicting the Evangelists. Complete copy in an unusually fine condition, white and crisp paper, only a small number of leaves w. thumbing spots, a few leaves repaired w. no loss of text. Sharp images throughout. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT - THE LADDER OF DIVINE ASCENT
Saint John Climacus (c. 525 - 606). Circa 1800.
Beautiful manuscript, neatly handwritten- Initials mostly in red, some in green and yellow. Fullpage colored illumination depicting Climacus The Ladder (The Ladder of Divine Ascent), showing monks ascending and falling from the ladder to heaven, with Jesus at the upper right helping them. The treatise is a guide for practicing a life wholly devoted to God. The ladder metaphor is used to describe how one may ascend into heaven by first renouncing the world and finally ending up in heaven with God. The treatise follow a progression that transitions from start (renunciation of the world) to finish (a life lived in love) by a series of thirty steps. The Ladder is one of the most widely read books among Orthodox Christians, especially during the season of Great Lent which immediately precedes Pascha (Easter). Contemporary full leather over wooden boards, blind stamped w. clasps intact. Very well preserved, occasional minor soiling to lower outer margins. 320 leaves on paper.

The printer was the well known Ukrainian printer Stavnytsky Petro, in an edition of 1200 copies. Complete copy, 436 leaves, illustrated with 16 engravings by the native artists Nikodim, Vasil and Georgy.
The book is lithurgical, consists of a prayer book for Lenten days. "Triod" means "threesongster", canons with three songs instead of the usual nine. The book was commonly used by the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine.
Folio. Contemporary leather over wooden boards. Usual spotting, thumbing in lower outer margins, candle light spots here and there, some leaves with old repairs. Overall a well preserved and complete copy.
